It is that time of the year, Books for Keeps!
Books for Keeps was founded in 2009 by Mary Holland's dear friend Melaney Smith, whose primary goal was to stop the "Summer Slide." The "Summer Slide" is the learning loss suffered by many underprivileged children during the summer, when they are away from school.
For 11 months, Melaney's team collects, inspects, sorts, and boxes books, only to give them all away in May.
Their goal is to give every child 12 books, when they leave for the summer in May. The program started at Alps Elementary school in Athens, and has now expanded to all Athens children attending an elementary school where 90% or more of the students quality for a free/reduced-price lunch. Since 2009, Books for Keeps has given more than 138,000 books to children from low-income families in grades Pre-K through 12.
