Zelina
Brunschwig (1897-1981), who was also known as “Mrs. B”, was an interior
designer and is credited with introducing designer’s skill of organizing
coordinates into showroom displays. She graduated from Parsons in the
1920s, and worked for McMillen as a designer. When her husband went off
to WWII, she quit her McMillen job and became director of her husband’s company
Brunschwig & Fils. Without French imports, Mrs. B was forced to be
innovative during the war, and used parachute cloth for silk, muslin for linen,
and found American fabric mills to weave and print her own designs, which were
bright and airy. She also expanded the
line to include more fabrics, wallpapers and trims. Mrs. B also brought
French traditional style to American homes. Brunschwig
& Fils Up Close focuses on the most renowned textile décor company in
the world and takes you through pages of grand room in the White House and
Versailles to Southern homes and show an abundance of creative ideas on using
fabrics, wallpapers and furnishings. Brunschwig & Fils is now owned
by Kravet and is available to designers across the country.
